Big scary stuff

1: Good friends catching up in my last hours before flight. 2/3: A lovely message from my wonderful niece.

People don’t realise what’s involved for someone giving everything up and heading off into the unknown. It’s all ‘awesome’, ‘wow’ or ‘sssooo amazing’. I finally bought my ticket to India 5 days ago after spending a long time amending my plans due to monsoon season and crap timing on my behalf. Amongst all the excitement, I’d been packing up and readying to leave my flat but it was a hard few days!

I say hard because not only did I find myself packing up things I’d completely forgotten about but I was simultaneously trying to ensure all my official stuff was done too and trying not to worry about EVERYTHING. Then there’s the emotional side, the one most don’t consider. Choosing to sell everything, trying to plan a trip and preparing isn’t an easy job. And once you have a grip on that, you can throw in the realisation that funds are on the decline each day, then mix that in with soon being without a home to run back to if things go wrong and it all starts to become a bit scary!

Don’t misunderstand me here, I’ve had days of wonder and excitement but making the big move for my second journey has literally had me terrified and I’ve really had to face my fears head on this time. Yes, choosing to ride Portugal on my own with little knowledge of the terrain ahead is a bit bonkers and some may say that ‘it should be ok this time because I’ve done this before’, but this time is very different because I’m actually leaving home.

(The above words I wrote a couple of days ago and I now publish this from my hostel in Delhi. Unfortunately my last few days were hectic with no time for any web malarkey).

  1. “A comfort-zone can be a lovely place, but nothing really grows there” is a phrase that has always stuck in my mind. I just wish I had the conviction to break my servitude to the almighty $, jack everything in, and head off on another adventure. In the meantime I will do so vicariously through your good self. Keep the inspiration and the blog posts flowing. Maximum respect brother.

  2. As Christopher Mccandless said – “ The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun“
Try not to worry too much about the future, everything will eventually fall into place, we’ve had times when we didn’t know what’s going to happen, how far we’ll get on our limited money, but it’s all worked out so far 😁

    1. Very wise words by the man. Thanks for the advice Connor, fear can sure halt us from progress! That’s what part of my trip is about, facing self created fear and pushing my own limits. 🙂👍🏼
