From historical to hysterical.

I can laugh now I’ve showered, washed Bernard in the river, removing the baked concrete clay, booked another hostel and spent the afternoon washing and drying my clothes and shoes! Yay! great!

So I headed south to see some Roman ruins, happily following my GPS route. The day was cool and the route a mix of tarmac, farm and forest tracks, with one certain track, approx. 8 miles out of town soon to be my bestest friend EVER!

Bottom right: once it was all over and the days washing/drying complete.

It had been raining for a few days but this berk didn’t consider that at all did he… My besty became hell within half a mile, changing from forest track to puddled track to clay glue and large pools. In the name of exploration and the crusades of olde—that’s the only weird reason I can support my ‘actions’—I push on, and get myself stuck in clay, my bike wheels jamming up with clay glue, climbing barbwire to escape logging traffic etc.

Turning back wasn’t an option because I’d pushed too far and the road got worse—Google said there was life not far ahead. I managed to roll through the deep logging trailer ruts that were flooded by pushing along at the side…

I fell in.

I was forced to ride 8 miles soaked, my shoes oozing every time I pedalled, both me and the bike covered in clay filth. Luckily my route home took me by the river at Coimbra and it was there that I could wash Bernard of the baked on clay which had almost turned to concrete!

Lesson #2; know when to give up.

Tomorrow Aveiro. Rome can do one…

    1. 2.0” tyres Al, so not an issue. It was the caked clay that solidified everything.
I had to get my bike over a barbwire fence then get myself over as them tractor units were massive with no room if one came by.
One saw me but he was too busy loading.
At the time it was awful.

  1. Best laugh yet Rich. Oh dear. Hope you’ve both recovered. Have you been introduced to your intuition? Perhaps it’s time you got acquainted 😅
